Weaver & Textile Designer

I began weaving after a career in architecture and architectural education. My design experience informs my woven textile processes and an interest in three dimensional, spatial concepts is something that I try to explore in woven form. In order to do this, I use materials and weave structures that will produce 3-D form or that are visually dynamic.

There are two strands to my work. One consists of functional pieces; scarves, cushions, bags etc. The other is work that can be hung on the wall or window, designed to enhance the space or to filter light.

My work is made using natural fibres such as wool, linen, cotton and paper and is produced on one of several looms in my studio. I designed my studio and home in Thurgoland, which is a village in inspirational, rolling countryside, north of Sheffield, UK.

If you would like to learn how to weave and have no experience or are a weaver who would like to learn new skills, I offer two workshops, which will give you enough experience of loom weaving to be able to carry on learning independently or through further tuition.

Introduction to Weaving
The 'Introduction to Weaving' workshop is for absolute beginners and is designed to give you a taste of the endless possibilities of loom weaving. The workshop will begin with the very basics and will take you through the sequence of stages to start weaving independently. These include selecting and designing a warp, understanding the process of getting a loom ready to weave and beginning to weave and experiment on the loom.

This workshop is a one day session from 10.30am -4.30pm with a break for lunch. The workshop is offered to individual students or to groups of two or three people. Please contact me for a suitable date.

Dressing Your Loom
This workshop is designed to take students through the stages of preparing a warp to dressing a loom. There will be advice on selecting warp yarns, calculating sett and warping the loom from back to front. Learn how to tackle this essential skill with hands-on help and on one of my studio's table looms. All equipment and materials are provided, however if you would like to use your own loom, please let me know in advance.

This workshop is a one day session from 10.30am- 4.30pm with a break for lunch. The workshop is offered to individual students or to groups of two or three people. Please contact me for a suitable date.

I have a number of looms in my studio - a four-shaft table loom, two eight-shaft table looms, a 24 shaft dobby loom and an eight-shaft countermarch floor loom. Students will have the opportunity to try out many of these looms during the course of a workshop. (I may have work on one or another but the remainder will be set up for experimentation.)

Individual Tuition
I am also keen to work with students of all abilities and to make my studio a base for learning together. So if you would like to enquire about individual tuition, please contact me directly using the Contact Page.
